Who is embarrassed to negotiate in front of friends & colleagues?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

womenmoneyThrough discussions with women I know of all ages, it seems that some of us are too embarrassed to negotiate at all, while many of us find it extra embarrassing to negotiate in front of friends or colleagues for fear of what they may think of us.  It seems that there is still a stigma attached to negotiation be it when we are looking to make retail or wholesale purchases, buy at markets or even negotiate our salaries in the workplace.

Do women care more what others think of them than men when it comes to negotiation?  Why are we embarrassed to negotiate when spending our hard earned cash or negotiating our worth in the workplace?

Note: If you are interested in improving your negotiation skills, come along to the Women in Finance Event on the 20th October 2009 - ‘Negotiation for Women How Confident are you in your Salary Negotiation Skills?’

Testimonials

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

ladywithbookI’ve had the pleasure of engaging Kelly as a speaker and HR expert on numerous occasions in the area of salary negotiation, and she always delivers.  Her enthusiasm and knowledge are obvious and she creates a strong and lasting positive  impression. Kelly is a great educator and smart presenter whose personable and practical approach generates great results – every time. I highly recommend Kelly as a speaker and presenter and as an HR specialist. Highly professional, motivated and knowledgeable, Kelly and her team at Six Figures work to best practice to get the job done. They are always polite, approachable and honest, and appreciate the specific challenges facing women in the workplace. Bridgette Engeler Newbury, National President JCI & Owner of Incognito Sum

I have had the pleasure of being in the audience whilst Kelly Magowan has been presenting on numerous occasions. Her enthusiasm and passion for the topic area has always been inspiring for the audience. Kelly has consistently been able to deliver a clear message, impart her vast knowledge of the topic and be engaging at the same time. Her responses to questions has always been insightful and informative. Melissa Martin, Director, The Clarity Group

I was introduced to Kelly Magowan 12 months ago at the launch of her new online company,Six Figures. Since then, an informal relationship between Six Figures and the Career Centre at Melbourne Business School has developed. Our team subscribes to the Six Figures Client Newsletter, and from time to time, I enjoy trading employment market insights with Kelly. In December 2008, Six Figures produced a Salary Negotiation guide for job seekers. We were pleased to add this valuable resource to our online career management library. When organising a Career Success program earlier this year for graduating MBA students, we approached Kelly to deliver a workshop on this subject. Kelly was kind enough to accept our invitation, and at our urging, agreed to extend the session to include insights on building and maintaining one’s Personal Brand – both online and offline. I was particularly impressed (and gratified) with the amount of preparation Kelly put into this presentation, and the fact that she listened carefully to our brief and framed the material for the needs of our audience.  Kelly delivered the two-hour session to an audience of some 50 students on February 6th this year in our Conference Centre.

I observed a number of qualities about her presentation:
• low key and no-fuss arrival, with time to spare before the scheduled start of
presentation;
• flexibility to adapt the session parameters due to a late finishing earlier session;
• a genuine desire to impart valuable insider recruitment tips to our audience;
• a capacity to share her own story and the development of her personal brand;
• comprehensive reading materials and preparation quizzes delivered prior to the
session;
• contemporary Web 2.0 knowledge and utility;
• thorough knowledge of material and ability to concentrate on specific themes
depending on audience questions;
• preparedness to confront audience with hiring practices that reflect real-world
conditions;
• confidence to have the session video-taped as a permanent student resource;
• administered session evaluation at the conclusion of the workshop.
In addition to these points, the key quality that came across in Kelly’s presentation was her passion for the subject matter, giving her greater presence and warmth as a speaker. I am pleased to recommend Kelly Magowan from Six Figures as a public speaker who possesses speaking expertise suitable for a range of audiences. Leo Grogan, Careers Consultant, Melbourne Business School

‘Kelly’s presentation at our seminar on ‘International Entrepreneurship in the Current Economic Climate’ held by the International Business Club on 24.04.09 at the AGSE was very insightful. It was right on target, to the point and relevant to the target audience. The feedback from the attendees has been that it was very useful and helpful to them for planning their entry into overseas markets. They could relate to the issues, and were glad to recieve some tips on things they had to keep in mind.Kelly was a charming and powerful speaker, and made a strong impact on the audience.’ Suhasini Seelin, Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship

Kelly Magowan nee Kaplon’s Bio

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Kelly Magowan nee Kaplon has been specialising in the arena of Human Resource Management, Recruitment and Career Coaching for 12 years. Initially focusing on commercial recruitment, and later moving into corporate Human Resources working with the likes of Ernst & Young and General Electric. In these roles Kelly was exposed to best practice HR and developed a true passion for Human Resources Management.

Earlier on in her career, Kelly spent a few years working in commercial recruitment for companies such as Select Appointments, Chandler MacLeod (formerly Recruitment Solutions) and Qudos. During her time at Qudos Kelly identified a gap in the marketplace for affordable and personalized career coaching services for non-professionals. This led her to establish a Career Transition service. In addition to this, Kelly also developed a HR Consulting service that supported SME’s with professional, economical and practical HR solutions.

In early 2003 Kelly co-founded The Clarity Group Pty Ltd, a company specializing in recruitment across a diverse range of professions, from Accounting & Financial Professionals through to Office Support Staff. In addition to recruitment, The Clarity Group Pty Ltd provides One-On-One Career Coaching Services and a Human Resource Consulting Service for SME’s.. Kelly sold her share in the company in late 2006.

In early 2007 Kelly began developing Six Figures the Premium Job Site for high salary earners to connect with $100K+ job opportunities, across all industries and professions. The site launched in March 2008 and was quoted by Springwise, the global trending spotting site, as one of the next trends to watch. More recently Six Figures has been listed by Hitwise as one of the ‘fast movers’. Six Figures is building a reputation as the job site with integrity that delivers both great job opportunities and a high quality of relevant applicants to Advertisers.

Kelly’s experience working across HR, Recruitment & Career Coaching has provided her with a solid understanding of what the job market looks like, what employers look for and the common experiences and challenges both face.

Kelly has completed a Masters in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, a Graduate Certificate in HR Management, a Bachelor of Arts and a Certificate IV in Workplace Assessment & Training. Kelly is a professional member of the Australian Association of Career Counsellors, the Australian Human Resources Institute and the Melbourne Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Kelly also writes for the Six Figures Blog as well as contributing to Australian Women Online and CEO Online as well as being a professional speaker on the topics of Career Management, Personal Branding and Salary Negotiation. You can follow me on Twitter at kellykaplon
